Self-Injurious Behaviors in Children and Adolescents: Types, Causes, and Treatment

  • Participants will gain an understanding of self-inflicted violence, its impact on the lives of youth and their families. 

  • Participants will understand the types of self-harm as well as the functions, purpose, and triggers for self -inflicted violence.

  • Participants will explore workers feelings and attitudes to self injury. 

  • Participants will learn indicators that someone intends to or is self-harming. 

  • Participants will learn best practice in communication with someone who self-harms, handling disclosure and techniques to reduce, change, or to lower risk. 

  • Participants will learn what is helpful or unhelpful.

  • Participants will discuss perspectives on “contagion effect”.
