The Great Generational Divide: Navigating Struggles for Control

  • Participants will learn about the “normalcy” of power struggles within the context of adolescent development.

  • Participants will discuss how out-of-home placement, mental health challenges, academic delays and trauma may affect adult-child relationships.

  • Participants will learn the concept of care balanced by clear expectations.

  • Participants will examine conflicts and the means to their resolution.

  • Participants will be taught skills to lessen the incidences and emotional intensity of developmentally normal power struggles.

  • Participants will be shown how to replace retributions with setting boundaries and consistently maintaining them.

  • Participants will explore the underlying beliefs they hold about teens.

  • Participants will have the opportunity to fine-tune the communication techniques already in place while being offered new ones to enhance cooperation and mutual respect.
