Supervision in Social Work Practice

  • Identify and define the purpose, role, and functions of supervision. 

  • Identify and utilize various theoretical models of supervision. 

  • Apply knowledge of the stages, strategies, and skills of the supervisory process.

  • Describe the potential influence of various forms of diversity on the supervision process.

  • Identify the unique challenges faced by supervisors in organizations in small organizations, communities and rural areas and discuss ways for dealing with these challenges. 

  • Utilize the NASW Code of Ethics to identify and respond to ethical dilemmas in staff supervision.

  • Evaluate the “goodness of fit” between their own supervisory skills and their future as social work supervisors, including plans for addressing areas for improvement and on-going learning.
